celebrate 6!

turning 6 could have not been more fun!  we partied a little early (dec 15), but giving luca a full five days of celebration seems just right for this kid.....
zeeks pizza for 10 kids + 6 adults
zoo wild lights plus a big faux snowball fight!   both luca and his brother claimed "the best birthday party ever"!  i'm inclined to agree.....
pink cupcakes, his choice!

luca was the only one to wear his rudolph nose all night

another sweet nothing

the conversation between me and luca went like this:

me: hey luca, what do you want for your birthday?
luca: pokemon!
me: come on luca, that's on your christmas list.  what do YOU REALLY WANT for your birthday?
luca: mom. i want mom.
me: luca, you have me. always and forever. so what do you want for your birthday?
luca: just you mom.  i want to hold you all day.
(precious moment that i want to remember forever and never forget how awesome my almost 6 year old made me feel right then)

sweet nothings

who doesn't love a sweet note such as this?!  i love you too true.

giving thanks, 2014

we hosted thansksgiving this year at the house....i was worried because of the size of our house, and our old kitchen with no dishwasher....but everything was absolutely great!  i love having family at the table, and celebrating food and friendship and love.  our table, which is the table i grew up eating thanksgiving dinner on (thanks mom for saving this for me), easily accommodated 9 people and a 16lb turkey.
instead of going around the table to say what we are thankful for, we drew and wrote on the paper that covered the table.  i loved the artwork, and couldn't resist snapping a few pics.
thanks nicola, lincoln, roberta, gayle, skylar, aaron, true, luca and penny for a great holiday.  i love my family!

we've got spirit!

we recently found out that our very own luca wayne erbeck won the 2014 spirit award!  we're not entirely sure what this means, or how he did it, but true says luca won because, "he's kind and helpful, he follows directions".   well alright luca!  congratulations!

completely. normal.

completely. normal.  that was our weekend.  it wasn't filled with racing or training or worry about racing and training.  it was just normal.  like i'll bet 80% of families spent their weekend.  here are the things we did:  went to a birthday party (luca). had a play date (true). went to the park (true + his friend).  cleaned bikes (mom). folded 5 loads of laundry (mom).  raked leaves (mom + true + luca). cleaned windows (mom). cleaned carpets (dad). homework (dad).  trip to the bookstore (true +luca + dad + mom).
sooooo normal.  and good.  a nice change of a pace.
True, in one of his favorite environments, the bookstore, non-fiction section

every kid needs a pile of leaves in the fall!

woodland park GP

the last race in the MFG cyclocross series, and true and luca did not disappoint.  the course was extra tough...lots of hills, a huge long run up, barriers to a run up, and plenty of technical and muddy steep hills, turns and twists.  it's amazing that the kids tackle this like it's a playground...and without fear.  such a great season, i'm sad that it's coming to a close.  for this cold rainy day race, the kids wore my racing arm wamers on their legs.  they were super excited to be wearing some actual, real alki-rubcion clothing.

this boy loves his bike

bring it!

both boys are loving their new bikes at the races!  this past race was really awesome, with luca's buddies showing up to watch him race.  nothing like having some fans to make things fantastic!

halloween 2014

this year was a real departure from the past erbeck halloweens.....first of all, we lacked a seamstress to create the costumes... both grandma and aaron had pretty full plates!  mom to the rescue with a simple point and click at halloweencostumes.com-   within four days we had a luke skywalker and fighter jet pilot dude. kids were happy enough, although they did comment on how smelly and cheap the costumes felt.  i'm glad the kids have appreciation for artisan construction!
secondly, aaron was out of town for work, so i stayed back to hand out candy to the hoards of kids, while auntie nicola and penny took true and luca around the 'hood.   it was a mellow halloween, with the crowds dying down early in the wind/rain storm.  the kids got into pjs, we watched free birds, and went to bed early.

brace face

true's braces are on!  he was a champ through the entire process.  his color choice for the bands around the brackets was neon green...he said because he knew his brother's favorite color is green.  so sweet.

giving an erbeck best

the 2014 Greenwood Jog-A-Thon was a great success!  aaron and i both took the day to watch the kids and encourage them to reach their lap goals.  as usual, i spent the entire event choking back tears.   it's really quite amazing to watch all these little people so determined to just give their absolute best-  absolutely one of the most inspirational events i have ever attended.
luca picked one speed, and kept at it the entire time! the only kinder to never stop running

nice socks luca!

true has grown to into quite the runner...perfect form

true really gave his all...his final few minutes of sprinting to make his goal were emotionally overwhelming for all of us

we heart bikes

with all this crazy racing going on....aaron and i quickly realized it was time for us to upgrade the kids' bikes.   this is no small feat....there are sizes and types to research...and there are financial considerations to make.  do we just get them mountain bikes and let them race 'cross on those?  or do we get them two bikes....one immediately to race 'cross on, one later to ride mountain bike trails?
we agonized for weeks, finally got ready to pull the trigger (with true getting a new bike and luca getting his hand me down), when a better opportunity presented itself.  a good friend really hooked us up and both of our kids ended up with new bikes.  it was astounding, unexpected, and really appreciated.  luca was so overwhelmed with emotion-  his own, brand new cyclocross bike!  he declared Oct 10, 2014 as the "absolute best day of my life so far".  he said that more than once!!!!!
checking to see if the bike is light enough

cheap babysitter

the kids like to come out to racing sundays....where they race at 11:45 and i race at  12:15.  when aaron doesn't come with us, i need somebody to hang out with the kids while i'm out on the course.  sometimes we have a parent volunteer, other times the kids are left to the electronic babysitter, the iPad.  she works wonders and in general, keeps the kids entertained for hours.

supplemental learning

The kids think they are getting away with some screen time....and in a way, they are.  But what's really happening is some supplemental learning!  We love that Miss Mary the Fab exposes the kids to more things in her computer lab.
Plus they should be pro with the mouse and keyboard by the time they are in 4th grade!

keelings visit seattle!

the boys have been looking forward to this visit for a while!  they discussed sleeping arrangements (luca says georgia or magnolia should share his bed or both), they discussed the lego creations they would work on, they discussed the soccer games they would play.  and the keelings came and much of that all happened...with the exception of georgia and magnolia sharing luca's bed.
good times, as always, with this pdx crew.

number two

just got a pic from miss mary....luca lost his tooth at lunch...eating a corn muffin (so you know that tooth was READY to come out!)
(update, my post above is not accurate....luca lost his tooth before lunch.  the muffin had nothing to do with it!)

oh hello tooth fairy, please meet luca

luca has had two new teeth coming in for months...with no movement from his baby teeth.  in fact, just in august the dentist told us we'd likely need them pulled.  so every day since luca heard that, he's been gently wiggling that tooth.  and finally, today, bam, out it came!  i'll bet the second one is out by tomorrow night.  i wonder what the tooth fairy will bring......

going to work

true and luca really love to work. seriously.  their best day ever would be to sling hammers with dad and create something or nothing at all.   saturday morning they couldn't be bothered to wait around for us to give them a project....they put on tool belts loaded with tools, helmets, and safety goggles and took off over to Hi Matt's in search of work.  matt and jenny are kind enough to oblige, and will give them some tasks.  we love our neighbors, and we love that they take time of our their busy day to help us raise good kids.  it takes a village.

post soccer workout

a nice dip at the view ridge pool!  the kids love when they are invited to the pool after soccer, and it's hard to take them away when its time to go home.  this is the stuff summer memories are made of!

soccer camp

both boys are in sounders soccer camp this week!  luca is especially excited, as he is sporting his first pair of real soccer cleats, his very own, not even hand-me-downs.  he is so proud that he told me he would clean them off every night.  it was such a touching moment.....

downtown library

my kids adore the library, and the grandparents are happy to comply with library outing requests.  although we have a city library just one block away, the grands like to take the kids to different branches for variety (plus seattle has recently completed remods on several locations, which makes for extra fun book finding).
grandma's request this trip was to hit the downtown library....truly an interesting space with a forward color palette!
