we are tracking santa via norad.org.  great website that gives us real time updates!  that santa sure is amazing and what a sleigh!  and those reindeer are in turbo mode tonight.
luca thought that feeding the reindeer was way more important than feeding santa.  good call luca!

oh happy 5th birthday luca wayne erbeck

we love our little big man!  he's such a charmer, and so fun, and the only erbeck who is always in a great mood from the second he first opens his eyes in the morning.  way to be luca!
mad props to our dear friend heather keeling at hvk photo...truly a talented photographer.

Luca's 5th bday party

we celebrated luca's birthday party just a few days early this year.  we started with cupcake decorating at his preschool (btw, luca is the one who decided he had to have pink frosting and sprinkles), then off we went to soccer and the bouncy house mania with pizza and cake!  we had a great time and i am really thankful for all of our friends who made it out to a mid-week evening party.  we really appreciated the effort.  luca had a blast, and i couldn't have been more pleased...it was his first ever FOR REAL birthday party complete with the friends of his choosing.  happy 5th birthday to my big boy!
sophie and magnolia (not THE magnolia, obviously) at the birthday table with luca- his choice!

the birthday team at the bouncy house. a bunch of animals for sure!

woodland park zoo wildlights!

while grandma and grandpa were in town, they took us all the the woodland park zoo wildlights!
it was a rainy night, but we are from seattle,  so what's a few drops?  it was actually a torrential downpour, but miraculously it cleared once we entered.  we had the place to ourselves and enjoyed the awesome lights, "snowball" fights, bubble snow, a ride on the carousel followed by a pizza dinner.  good times!

determination, defined

a friend of ours sent me this link...which talks about cyclocross in the pacific northwest.  it's extra cool because it has a picture of me racing, and a picture of the kids cheering!

happy birthday AG of DC!

the kids kept auntie gayle's orcas island surprise birthday a secret!  they helped grandma make a special cake, and they shopped for sweet little presents.  they wrapped them and didn't say a word for an entire day.  they could hardly wait for the moment when they could sing and eat cake (mostly to eat cake, but they sang with gusto too).  we loved spending a fun night with AG, and i think she likes her gifts (fancy mint soap, a bracelet that luca made, a necklace from luca's dress up bin, and a little capsule necklace with a secret message from the kids inside, a ball made of wiki sticks).  good times!

waiting for grandpa

Thursday, November 14, 2013

i spent the evening with luca's preschool teachers, learning how he learns.  i am really amazed by this fancy pants school, their teaching philosophy, their enthusiasm and passion for early learning.  i feel fortunate that we were able to place our son there.
currently, the kids are working on monthly self portraits.  here's luca's first...i find kid's art fascinating.

true is also learning and growing and changing and in general, being smart.  in his spare time, he launches science experiments....last night, he grew a crystal tree.

racer boy

he's still at it. racing. and smiling. and killing it with his new fancy flame gloves.

carkeek 2013

our fav park with some of our fav friends!  it was a gorgeous veteran's day and we celebrated the men and women who have served this country by celebrating freedom and our right to roam.  true says that he felt particularly grown up today, like a 9 year old, because he crossed streets and bridges by himself and because he did whatever he felt like on the beach...without input or correction from mom.  yes, we were all truly free today.

luca was feeling under the weather...so he stayed home from school and i stayed home from work.  we took a little nap together in the afternoon and i awoke to the sound of giggling, and about 100 new pictures on my iPhone.

2013 halloween!

what fun we had!  a vampire vs a leopard...thanks to grandma erbeck for the NEW leopard costume, and keeping aaron's vampire  costume from when he was 8 years old! true loved using his dada's vintage costume.  and luca loved being the cutest, and fiercest, and warmest leopard in town.

it's always nice to get a text from a couple of erbecks to brighten my day.

still loving racing!

big weekend for true, who upgraded from the little kids race, to the juniors.  that means that he was given a timing chip and a bib number, and he was scored!  it also means that he raced with kids much older than himself....which made him so nervous that he almost decided against the race.  at the last minute he thought he'd give it a try, once we told him he could stop whenever he decided he had enough.  and of course.....he didn't stop.  he finished his race, 35 minutes, with a huge smile.  he proceeded to tell me all about the course, and he gave me pointers and suggestions for my race, which i was off to start.  i listened very carefully, for my child's enthusiasm melted my heart and also made me want to give my best, just as he did.  it really is amazing when your child becomes your inspiration. (and btw, i had the most fun and one of my best races yet...i attribute this to my son).

31st place is a great for a kid 2 years younger than the rest!

luca was initially upset to be racing with little kids....but not when he came in 3rd!

number four

yes, number four.  this time, no struggle, no pleading, nothing.  true proclaimed that after he finished his homework, he would pull out a tooth.  oh right, we all thought.  then he did.

true is learning the value of setting a goal, devising a plan to achieve the goal, executing the plan, and achieving the goal.  his goal: run 40 laps in the jogathon.  his plan: train as often as possible, running laps, running sprints. his execution: running as often as he could!  his achievement: 43 laps!
it goes without saying that we were so proud.  near the end, when true was showing signs of wearing out, he pushed through the pain and kept running.  there was NO way this kid was not going to achieve that goal.  this ambition and drive will serve him well in life.
getting stoked for the start with dad and finn!

first lap and great form!

a little encouragement from a lap with dad

luca was there to high five and cheer his brother!

done and really proud of his hard work!

aaron and luca love this kinda crazy song singing political kooky guy, usually found strumming at greenlake or in front of whole foods.   he really is quite a good guitar and harmonica player and we usually find ourselves tapping our feet.  today, luca pulled out his harmonica (he carries it in his pocket!) and played along.   guitar man was impressed as was the small group that had collected to listen.

cheer squad

the kids really got into cheering at the last race.  it's a simple thing really.... having a bunch of kids screaming your name and running up the hill while you turn over your pedals is really quite the motivator.  the kids had so much fun doing it, and the racers really appreciated the effort.

getting ready!

our neighbors usually take the cake for any holiday display...but since vern's knee operation, their house has remained sadly without the the usual over the top lawn full of plastic lighted craziness.  it's up to us, says true.
we can try, but we'll never really compete with what once was.

just a few more

just a little help from mom. not much though!

big kid race!

my little sons amazed today like they never have.  they raced with the big kids, but on the grownup course!  they actually did an entire lap in some of the sloppiest, muddiest, wet-grassiest conditions ever to be had.  i just couldn't believe what they could get through.  aaron and i were really proud...and they smiled the entire time.
and to give you some perspective...my race was only 3 of those laps and i was cursing for most of it!
